Black Health Briefing

We hear and feel the data very clearly; every seven minutes a Black person dies prematurely in the United States. We have decades of research indicating that Black Americans fare the worst or are among the worst for key health indicators including: maternal mortality, infant mortality, asthma rates, cancer rates, food insecurity, evictions, homelessness, unemployment, COVID-19 cases, and overall life expectancy. 80-90% of our health outcomes are driven by the social determinants of health, the conditions created that marginalize people.

We also know that the health disparities that exist on the national level are mirrored in our own state, Washington. So, how can we prevent premature Black death in our state? What solutions should our state be looking towards in order to set an example for the future of equitable health? To answer these questions and provide insights into what they have been seeing, we invited six community leaders who believe in the gold-standard of public health practice: community-led. Watch our 2021 Black Health in Washington State Briefing, organized by the Tubman Center for Health & Freedom in partnership with African American Health Board, Surge Reproductive Justice, and King County Equity Now.

Update: Hear from Representative Kirsten Harris-Talley (37th district) as she recaps Community’s accomplishments in the 2022 Washington State Legislative Session, including the Doulas for All bill and an important investment in the Tubman Health.
