White Supremacy Makes Us Sick: Tubman Health On Anti-Asian Hate Crimes

People of Color have always understood racism to be a public health crisis. Those of us living at intersections of oppression understand that the very act of walking the earth in our bodies makes us vulnerable to assault and attack in every area of our existence. Understanding this makes it no less hurtful each and every time our communities are harmed. Our hearts hurt for the families of the women murdered and injured in Atlanta this week. As well as the thousands of other Asian people who have been targeted, attacked and harmed across the country in racists attacks.

The very root of our work at Tubman Center for Health and Freedom, is the belief that one can not achieve health without freedom, or freedom without health. White supremacy utilizes many vehicles to achieve its goals of violence, division, and harm toward Black and Brown people.

In the past year, the pandemic has been used as a vehicle to embolden white supremacists to increase violent attacks against members of Asian communities, particularly our elders. It’s been used as a vehicle to harm Asian communities with harassment, slander, and violence.  Families of these victims deserve justice and Asians, Asian Americans, People of Asian descent, deserve safety, protection from harm, health and freedom. In respect of our namesake, Ms. Harriet herself, we stand committed to support and protect all members of our communities.

* If you are someone who is experiencing increased stress and anxiety, triggered racialized trauma, or would otherwise benefit from Acupuncture/East Asian Medicine, but lack access, please send us a message through our website and ask to be referred to our Frontline Wellness Program. We are connecting Black & Brown community members in need with a series of free, private acupuncture treatments at locations in Seattle, Tacoma or Bellevue.

In Health & Healing,
